Do You Know ABC?

No, not those ABCs. The ABC I'm talking about is American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang. One part ancient Chinese folk tale and one part modern American coming of age story, and these two halves add up to be one really entertaining graphic novel that is all heart. The first story is a retelling of the ancient Chinese folk tale of the Monkey King. The second story introduces us to Jin Wang, an American born Chinese teenager who struggles with his identity: he is Chinese, but he is also American, and the two don't always blend together easily. The two stories come together to share a valuable lesson with the reader. Don't let the cartoons fool you, this books deals with serious issues, like racism and ethnic stereotypes. Along with Jin and Monkey you will learn that being yourself is not always easy, but it is always worth it.
